We invite writers, poets, playwrights, translators, screenwriters, literary researchers, critics, literary project developers, and also creative tandems to work in residence in a medieval castle., where she once began her literary career Enlightenment personality – writer and thinker Eliza von der Reke (1754-1833).
The duration of residence for one writer is 14–28 days per year. The premises of the “Jaunpils Writers’ Palace” are located on the 3rd floor, in the quieter – eastern – wing of the palace.. Two well-equipped apartments – “Elīzas ausma” and “Elīzas gaisma” – can accommodate 2–4 creative individuals at the same time. Each apartment has a kitchen and a bathroom.
The presence of 700 years of history, peace, spacious, elegant spaces and inspiringly beautiful surroundings create the ideal environment for creative work.
Residents have access to a special lunch offer in the castle's medieval pub, a library, shops, an ATM, and parcel machines are located just over a hundred meters away. Bus service to the nearest cities - Tukums and Dobele.

“The future of Latvia depends on how many people in our country will be who think critically and read qualitatively.” These wonderful words are recorded in the Reading Manifesto, which was jointly created by writers and the National Library and signed by the people, marking the 500th anniversary of the first book written in Latvian. And it is extremely symbolic that, by opening the residence, we see how important the written word is even today, at a time when we risk losing our identity in digital walls. My wish is that the new residence will become a place from which bridges will extend to villages and cities in Latvia and beyond. May everyone who enters this palace leave more fulfilled than when they entered.

Can residents stay at the “Jaunpils Writers' Palace” with their family – spouse, children?
The goal of the residence is to provide the best conditions for undisturbed creative work, therefore our Internal Rules stipulate that residents stay in the palace without their spouses (unless the spouse is also a resident), children, and pets.
If a resident definitely wants to be with their spouse or Muse, and if there is such an opportunity (if a literary couple has not applied at that time), a lodging fee of €20 per day must be paid for the second person.
Are guests allowed to visit the resident?
Of course. However, the resident is responsible for ensuring that his guests do not interfere with the work of other residents.
Children under the age of 12 may only be invited to visit with the express consent of the other resident.
Guests – up to 2 people – can also stay overnight in the residence free of charge, but no more than 2 nights within a 2-week period. If a guest needs to stay longer, a stay fee of €20 per day per guest is payable.
The residence administration must be informed of the arrival of guests.
Is there WiFi in the apartments?
Of course! Both apartments have excellent internet access. A printer and copier are also available during working hours. However, there is deliberately no television in the residence.
Do residents have a scholarship?
The number and amount of scholarships or daily allowances are announced at the beginning of each following year. They are awarded to residents who stay for at least 14 days. If there are no grants, writers have the opportunity to work in residence for their own money, paying €20 per day.
Is it mandatory to participate in community activities during residency?
Tukums – UNESCO City of Literature offers such opportunities, but it is not mandatory – we greatly respect the residents' creative work plans and desire to isolate themselves from everyday life. The resident also chooses whether or not to agree to publicity about their stay in the residency.
Do I need to bring my own bed linen and towels?
No. Jaunpils Castle takes care of this. Residents must take care of personal hygiene products, food, and cleaning their apartments during their residency.
